Chapter Eleven

Reese: Do you like Mary Poppins?

While she had her phone in her hand, she scrolled back through her text messages with Max. She’d already told Gavin the day before that she wouldn’t be in today, and instead of jumping out of bed to make the most of an impromptu day off, she opted to be lazy and sleep in.

Her suspicions were confirmed. Max was either the recipient or sender of the first and last texts. For every day since they’d become friends.

Friends … who kissed like Lucifer?

Hell, she texted with him more than Emera.

Rubbing a hand over her face, she let the pain in her forearm quell the confusion. It chased away the guilt she’d felt for kissing him. Although, he was the one who’d initiated it. But I did, too, kissing his cheek.

“Oh my God. Stop thinking about it!”

When Mom had come over last night, she’d had to really work at hiding her shellshock of not only having the guts to kiss Max, but that she’d survived it. It truly was a surprise that she hadn’t incinerated or floated off on a cloud.

In the lazy moment of the morning, she fell right back into replaying that kiss. Wishing for more. Pining for him yet again.

A text didn’t ping immediately and she set her phone down on her nightstand, sliding out of bed. He’s probably in Chem now, anyway. She froze from stretching. Wow. If she wasn’t keeping tabs on him, she sure stalked his life.

By the time she’d gone to the bathroom and taken the first set of pills for the day, she had a reply.

Max: You mean Emily Blunt?

She frowned.

Oh … yeah. They remade it. What haven’t they remade? As long as they didn’t touch Back to the Future, she hardly cared what movies Hollywood tried to bring back to life.

Dots appeared, showing he had another reply coming.

Max: I guess? Brunettes are sexy in general.

She grinned. “Nice.” So, he thought she was sexy, too—in general.

He wasn’t done yet.

Max: Or are you asking me if I like the Sound of Music lady? Cuz she’s freaking old.

Reese: Her name is Julie Andrews and she’s a dame.

She grabbed some clothes and dressed before she hunted for an easy breakfast—okay, brunch—on the go in the kitchen. If she hustled, she’d catch Brendon in his office since he’d said he’d pop in there before lunch. On the way out the door, she checked her phone.

Max: Okie dokie.

She typed back another question, the one she’d meant all along. I was referring to the music. Do you like the songs from Mary Poppins?

Max: I’m not a musical kind of guy.

Max: Is this some kind of trick question?

No trick. Just … comparing him to the last guy she’d considered having sex with.

Max was miles from Jay.

And no more of an option than he was yesterday. Still, he brightened her mood, if with a side kick of disappointment.

Reese: Do you like the songs in it? She jumped into her car, too sore with her arm to deal with wearing a heavy messenger bag walking to campus, as close as it was.
